چکیده

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: This thesis is a product under the International Polar Year (IPY) core project PPS Arctic (http://ppsarctic.nina.no) which was financially supported by the Research Council of Norway via the IPY grant 176065/S30 to A. Hofgaard. I would like to thank my supervisors Lars Söderström (NTNU) and Annika Hofgaard (NINA) for their time and effort in helping me build and structure this project. I appreciate all the good advice and encouragement received from them these two years. I received help from Sigrid Lindmo when setting up for burning soil samples in the laboratory. Help in overcoming statistical problems was received from current PhD student, Thomas Kvalnes, working at the R-help centre as well as from Wolf L. Eiserhardt for solving problems encountered in 'R' when creating graphs. Much appreciated input was also received from Jonathan Wright on the use of appropriate statistical models for my data. At times the statistics were overwhelming but with the collected help of these people I made it through. My wonderful assistant, Jorun Hofgaard, was very helpful during the field work. She worked hard to help me reach my field work deadlines and made working in the mountains a lot of fun. I am very grateful that this project has allowed me to gain such a wonderful friend. These two years have supplied me with greater knowledgeable about scientific writing, statistics, field and laboratory work, along with many good memories for which I will take with me into the future. Last but not least, I would like to thank my closest friend and sister, Kaspara Albertsen, for supplying me with words of encouragement when pressure was building up. It is amazing how a good support system can give you the extra boost that you need to get back on track when things become overwhelming.

Late Quaternary variations in tree cover at the northern foresttundra ecotone

[1] Accurate land cover reconstructions are essential to understanding the past and present biogeochemical and biogeophysical interactions between the land surface and atmosphere and the impacts of these interactions on climate. Here we quantitatively reconstruct late Quaternary shifts in woody cover across the Northern Hemisphere forest‐tundra ecotone, based on a synthesis of Northern Hemisphe...

Validation of the sigmoid wave curve fitting algorithm on a forest-tundra ecotone in the Northwest Territories, Canada

Article history: Received 25 August 2008 Received in revised form 22 November 2008 Accepted 26 November 2008 Ecotones are gradual transitions between two adjacent ecological systems. Ecotones are characterized by their spatial properties which are reflected in an ecotone width and location and the temporal variation across time during succession or environmental change on both a local and a glo...

Calibration and Validation of Landsat Tree Cover in the Taiga-Tundra Ecotone

Monitoring current forest characteristics in the taiga ́tundra ecotone (TTE) at multiple scales is critical for understanding its vulnerability to structural changes. A 30 m spatial resolution Landsat-based tree canopy cover map has been calibrated and validated in the TTE with reference tree cover data from airborne LiDAR and high resolution spaceborne images across the full range of boreal for...

Automatic Detection of Small Single Trees in the Forest-Tundra Ecotone Using Airborne Laser Scanning

A large proportion of Norway’s land area is occupied by the forest-tundra ecotone. The vegetation of this temperature-sensitive ecosystem between mountain forest and the alpine zone is expected to be highly affected by climate change and effective monitoring techniques are required. For the detection of such small pioneer trees, airborne laser scanning (ALS) has been proposed as a useful tool e...

Spaceborne potential for examining taiga-tundra ecotone form and vulnerability

In the taiga-tundra ecotone (TTE), site-dependent forest structure characteristics can influence the subtle and heterogeneous structural changes that occur across the broad circumpolar extent. Such changes may be related to ecotone form, described by the horizontal and vertical patterns of forest structure (e.g., tree cover, density and height) within TTE 10 forest patches, driven by local site...

The impact of climate change on ecosystem carbon dynamics at the Scandinavian mountain birch forest-tundra heath ecotone.

Changes in temperature and moisture resulting from climate change are likely to strongly modify the ecosystem carbon sequestration capacity in high-latitude areas, both through vegetation shifts and via direct warming effects on photosynthesis and decomposition. This paper offers a synthesis of research addressing the potential impacts of climate warming on soil processes and carbon fluxes at t...
